Recipe: Savory Meatball Casserole

This is one of my favorite recipes that was handed down from my mother. When shed make this for Sunday dinner, I would wait in anticipation for this flavorful, savory dish

Savory Meatball Casserole Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • pound sausage

  • cup plain bread crumbs

  • ? cup evaporated milk

  • 2 tablespoons minced onion

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder

  • 1 (10.75 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup

  • 1 (10.75 ounce) can cream of celery soup

  • 1 cup evaporated milk

  • cup water

  • 1? cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • teaspoon chili powder

  • ? cup shortening

  • ? cup evaporated milk

  • 1 egg

  • 1 cup grated Cheddar cheese

How to Make Savory Meatball Casserole

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

  2. Mix ground beef, sausage, bread crumbs, 1/3 cup evaporated milk, onion, and 1 teaspoon chili powder together in a bowl; shape into small meatballs.

  3. Cook and stir meatballs, 10 to 15 at a time, in a skillet over medium heat until slightly browned, 2 to 4 minutes. Return all meatballs to skillet, cover, and cook over low heat until meatballs are cooked through, about 10 minutes. Transfer meatballs to a 2 1/2-quart casserole dish. Pour excess grease out of skillet, reserving the browned bits of food in the skillet.

  4. Combine cream of mushroom soup, cream of celery soup, 1 cup evaporated milk, and water in the skillet with browned bits of food; cook and stir until sauce is steaming but not boiling, about 5 minutes. Pour sauce over meatballs.

  5. Combine flour, baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon chili powder in a bowl; cut in shortening until mixture is crumbly. Beat 1/3 cup evaporated milk and egg together in a separate bowl; mix into flour mixture until a sticky dough forms. Knead dough about 10 times. Roll dough into a 10x12-inch rectangle on a floured work surface. Sprinkle Cheddar cheese over dough. Starting on the long end, roll dough around cheese forming a roll; cut into 8 to 10 slices. Turn slices on their side and flatten slightly with your hand; arrange on top of sauce.

  6. Bake in the preheated oven until sauce is bubbling and biscuits are lightly browned, 20 to 25 minutes.

Savory Meatball Casserole Reviews

  • I love this recipe It is a family favorite. I have made it many times and have to say it is definitely my favorite casserole recipe.

  • This is a great recipe My husband is a meatball fan so this was perfect for us. Very creamy and comforting. Will be making again for sure.

  • Im the author of this recipe. I should have stated that the sausage is ground sausage such as Jimmy Deans Pork Sausage.

  • I have been making this recipe for many years. It was also handed down from my mom. I have a copy of the original recipe and I believe it was a Pillsbury Bake-Off contest winner.I always make the recipe as it is written and it is perfect every time This recipe was also requested by my son-in-law before he married my daughter and I told him he would only get it after they were married

  • I used Italian bread crumbs instead of plain bread crumbs. It is a time consuming recipe. But it is well worth it.

  • Edit to previous review: used 1/3 cup flour in sauce, in lieu of canned soups

Truth hurts! Nothing is perfect, life is messy. Relationship are complex. Outcomes are uncertain, people are irrational.
